Purslane Glycerite
Purslane (Portulaca Oleracea) Glycerite
Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a nutrient-dense, succulent weed with a strong affinity for oral health, traditionally used to treat mouth sores and inflammation due to its high antioxidant (vitamin A, C) and anti-inflammatory properties. It is highly effective for treating oral lichen planus (OLP), a chronic inflammatory condition of the mouth, with studies finding it as effective as topical steroids.
Medicinal Uses of Purslane for the Mouth
- Oral Lichen Planus: Clinical trials indicate that topical purslane gel significantly improves symptoms of oral lichen planus, including erosive and reticular lesions, without the side effects of conventional steroid treatments.
- Soothing Mouth Inflammation: Historically, practitioners like Galen recognized its efficacy in treating "heat in the mouth". Its high mucilage content offers soothing relief for mouth irritation and inflammation.
- Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant Support: It acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, aiding in the healing of gum diseases, mouth ulcers, and bacterial infections within the oral cavity.
Purslane is also in my Oral Lichen Planus Solution which has other anti-inflammatory properties and has worked very well for most of my clients. The addition of Purslane just enhances its powerful ingredients.
